User Rating:Big Buck Hunter was one of the last video games I ever played in an arcade (ok, it was a pub but the theory is the same). As a result, I was interested in seeing the iPhone/iPod touch version.
It does what it says on the package. You are a deer hunter and you have to shoot bucks (male deer) and not does (female deer) in various locations throughout the United States.
The graphics are fantastic. It’s difficult to compare it to the arcade version of the game due to the small screen but it feels like similar graphics and motion. Tapping the screen to fire is certainly easier and more accurate than holding a fake rifle and shooting at the screen. You do only get a maximum of three shots, so make them count. The game also comes with other "bonus" shooting games like "frog-flippin’".
Morally, I object to hunting for sport. However, I also don’t believe virtual bucks are the same as real ones, so I have no problems sending the little critters to computer heaven. It’s not for kids, but at the currently discounted price of $.99 the adults in your family can enjoy it.
It does take a while to get to the actual shooting. You have to click through several screens and there are a variety of pastoral scenes to choose from before you blow the brains out of a buck.
The game is fun and I’m waiting for the next version of the game that allows you to shoot a variety of other animals like lions, elephants, and Muppets.
Quick Take
Value:High.
Would I Buy Again:For $.99? Sure.
Learning Curve:Low.
What I Like:Excellent graphics.
What I Don't Like:Takes a while to get to the actual shooting.
Final Statement:It's not for small children, but adults would likely kill a lot of time in a queue playing this game.
