App Update – Tweetlink

The New York Times’ David Pogue recently had a great piece on Twitter. He did a super job explaining the rapidly growing, incredibly useful and fun, but little understood phenomenon that is Twitter. In it he noted the growth of desktop and handtop apps and the ways in which they make the service even more useful.

Twitterlink is yet another tool for Twittering that is quite useful. It enables you to send a shortened link to Twitter from Safari.

Here’s how it’s handy.

Imagine you are browsing on your iPhone… (not surprising since the iPhone grabbed more than 65% of the mobile browsing market last month!). You want to Tweet the link to your friends BUT also add a comment. But there’s a problem. Twitter gives you a set number of characters and the URL will eat up most of them. That’s where Tweetlink comes in.

By tapping a Safari bookmark, Tweetlink lets you send a shortened link (just 17 characters) of the current web-page to Twitter. That leaves plenty of space to add a comment. Twitterlink saves just 3 to 6 characters over "tinyurl.com", "rubyurl.com", and "short.ie" but when you are starting with just 140 charachters in the first place it makes a difference.
