Evernote Update 1.2 Is Huge!

I posted a few hours ago about what I thought would turn Evernote into THE productivity app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Well… seems like I didn’t have to wait very long at all. Turns out tonight’s Evernote update is a huge update.

First, the ability to edit notes is huge. No longer is Evernote for iPhone just a passive way to access data. So long as the notes were either created in Evernote or came into Evernote in plain text you can now edit at a later date. It works great! Now you can use Evernote to update lists, edit text and do basic word processing.

Second, the good folks at Evernote appear to have rebuilt the Audio Recorder. It is now finger-friendly, can record up to five minutes at a time and even includes a level meter. On the whole it is now a terrific way to capture voice notes.

Third, there is now a setting to only allow notes to be synced over wifi. With some Evernote users paying for data based on "consumption" and many potentially facing data caps this is a key way to keep extra cell costs from creeping in.

But wait… there’s more…

Image and Audio compression has been greatly improved and, according to Evernote, results in uploads being almost 4 times faster. (It certainly feels a whole lot faster to me!)

You can now take a call or quit Evernote without losing your work. Having lost work in just this way I am thrilled they made this change.

The folks at Evernote even have a sense of humor. In their Blog Post about Version1.2 the write:

Let’s just cut to the chase. You asked, and we made it happen:

  • I want to edit notes right on the iPhone: DONE
  • Give me more audio recording time: YOU GOT IT
  • Make image and audio uploads faster: IT’S 4X FASTER NOW
  • Let me choose to have notes sync only over WiFi: OKIE DOKIE
  • Ugh, the first line of my text notes gets cut off: FIXED
  • Integrate a flashlight application: UM, NO

Finally, they end the post with what is, in my opinion, the very best news-

Now that we’ve got the 1.2 release out, we’re rolling up our sleeves and getting started on the biggest task: letting you have local storage of notes right on your iPhone. Stay tuned.

The Evernote 1.2 is a huge update. It is almost as big as… 1.3 will be.

A huge thanks to the folks at Evernote. Theyy clearly listen to feedback and are doing an awesome job at creating what is clearly one of the leading productivity apps for the iPhone… and all computing.
