Airdrop is an implemented system by Apple in OS X and it allows owners of Macs to transfer files between computers using a simple Wi-Fi Direct connection. Basically the user is connected to another Mac, makes drag & drop to a file into a special menu, and the file appears on the other Mac HDD. The same is presently tested in iOS 7, the company allowing employees to transfer files between devices using a Wi-Fi connection formed between the terminals, the transfer of files can be generated in the future even with Macs or Android terminals, for example.

Apple is currently testing versions of iOS 7 internally that include the AirDrop WiFi-direct file sharing tool from the Mac, according to people familiar with the software. Sources say that the AirDrop functionality is currently integrated into the standard iOS share menu. AirDrop will work between two iOS devices and potentially between an iOS device and a Mac.

Wi-Fi Direct technology allows the transfer of files between terminals without using a Wi-Fi HotSpot, so basically all you have to do is to have your terminals within the Wi-Fi range. The technology was tested last year before the release of iOS 6, but Apple decided not to launch it, giving users the ability to sync documents and pictures with iCloud. iCloud problem is that it is made using an internet connection and users can not share files with terminals that are not logged into their iCloud account, AirDrop solving this problem.

Although currently the alpha build of iOS 7 included AirDrop Sharing, is not known if the function will be available in the final version of the operating system.
