iPhone 3.1 Upgrade Numbers

Benoit Maison from the image analysis company Vision Smarts — producers of the the barcode image to price comparison app pic2shop — wrote us to provide some data about consumer upgrades to 3.1. The chart shows that, already, 40% of users are on 3.1.

The data is calculated from pic2shop users. Maison says their user population is a reasonable approximation of the general iPhone population, so these numbers ought to be close to actual across-the-board upgrade numbers.

We love it when people share data. Have other data points for 3.1 conversion or something else? Send them on! team -at- mobileorchard.com

  1. Thanks for the stats. Interestingly, FishLabs posted some data in July on mobilegamesblog.com painting a different picture. This was before the 3.1 release, yet still seems relevant if only because the numbers are so different. They site holdouts in 2.x at 42.4%. This is based (they say) on 2 million downloads, and includes both iPhone and iPod Touch models. I suspect some of this can be attributed to the time difference and the release of 3.1, including apples press event announcing that upgrade. But is that the whole picture? It would be useful to know the sample size used by Vision Smartz, whether it included iPhones and iTouches, and as of what date it was captured. FishLabs also breaks down the hardware models within the iPhones, which is also of interest.
