My Favorite iPhone Camera App

It is a pretty safe bet that one key upgrade we’ll see when the next generation iPhone hardware is unveiled is an improved camera. The current camera is, at the same time, both mediocre and the best camera I have ever owner. It is mediocre since it is a 2MP, fixed camera that takes pictures that are, at best, good enough. It is "the best" since it is ALWAYS with me which means I can always grab a shot if the opportunity presents itself while, in the past the words "I wish I had a camera with me" were commonplace.

One other thing the iPhone’s camera already has going for it is the wealth of apps available for tweaking images. My favorite, by far, never ceases to impress and amaze me.

The other day I was looking through some old pictures and came upon five shots from an archaeological dig I worked on that I had carefully taped together to creat a panorama. It was a neat image but looked choppy and the seams disrupted what would otherwise be a great picture. Fast forward to today and the same shot could be taken, and the panorama created, with seems and entirely on my iPhone thanks to the app Pano.

Pano lets you take a series of pictures while holding the camera eithe in landscape or portrait and then seemlessly weaves them together. It is nothing short of amazing to my that the 400mHz processor in the iPhone can do the entire task on board and create an image that is PERFECTLY lined up on image to the next.

Here’s my latest panorama and, as you can see, no seams at all.
