Doppler Brings an Inexpensive Google Reader To iPhone.
Doppler is a newly released RSS reader for the iPhone and iPod Touch that brings synchronization with Google Reader and off-line access to feeds. At just $.99 Doppler has the potential to be an excellent RSS reader. Unfortunately the operative word here is “potential”.

Doppler’s interface is simple, effective, and quick to set up.

After inputing my Google Reader information, Doppler served up a list of feeds to which I am currently subscribed in Google Reader. I could select all or any number of them. It also offered an option to hide posts once they were read. After that, the initial synchronization was quick.

Actual navigation of the pages was easy and smooth. Pages displayed well and an assortment of options for emailing, saving as new, or sharing, were offered with the tap of a button. I was offered a once touch button to read “online” .

Sadly, all is not perfect. Far from it, in fact.

There was, however, a noticeable lag between hitting “Done’ in the settings and moving to the main page. The settings page was erratic in showing which feeds were part of my Google Reader list. . There is no option to change the font.  Of more concern, however, was the fact that this was the first app I have encountered in a while that constantly crashed.

As a result our recommendation is this- Doppler may eventually be an excellent choice as an RSS reader, especially if you use Google Reader, but for now, avoid it- that is, unless you are nostalgic for the pre-firmware 2.1 days of crash and crash again.
