Pocket Informant – Status Update

A number of people have asked me about the status of what it is, at least for me, perhaps most eagerly awaited out yet — Pocket Informant.

The good news is that the WebIS website is showing an introductory price of just $12.95 (as steal IMO). (Plus we’ll have some promo codes to share early on for some lucky WOiP readers.)

As far as the app itself goes, over the past few weeks I’ve had the opportunity to use a number of different builds and it’s looking terrific. There have been some snags along the way with regard to sync with Google Calendar and Toodledo but things are getting worked out and…

Alex from WebIS explained it in a post on the WebIS Blog. As he wrote—

Pocket Informant for iPhone itself is pretty much done. We could release the app itself <TODAY>. However, there are two parts to PI IP – the app and sync. Unfortunately sync is not ready.

Chris has been the main engineer on PI, while I’ve helped here and there. Some parts are completely my work, but its mostly Chris. Sync on the other hand was contracted out to a very very capable developer and was supposed to be done by November. Unfortunately we didn’t get the a first stab at sync until the end of December. This contractor did a great job on the business logic of the sync, but he made one fatal mistake: he didn’t ask questions. At the same time we made a mistake too: we assumed some things that we should’ve made clear in our spec. There was also one other fail point: we are paranoid about sharing our PI code so we only provided all of our data classes to the contractor. This means he got to use our model, but not the interface of PI. He made assumptions on that model that if he had the whole PI code or asked us to clarify, would’ve saved a lot of time.
