The Only Apps You Need for Football This Fall

For some people today is just September 5th, however for millions of people around the globe (and especially in the U.S.) today marks the beginning of Football season, finally the NFL season will officially commence today with the game between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. In the past it used to be that you either watched the games on your own TV or at a sports bar, well thanks to a multitude of different apps for iPhones and iPads it is now not only possible to watch games on the go, but also and out of original broadcast market.
Warning:
Some of these apps only work in the U.S. and some only with a subscription, while others only work outside the U.S. also with a subscription.

NFL Sunday Ticket Free for iPhone and iPad (with cable/satellite subscription)

NFL Sunday TIcket

If you are living in the U.S. then NFL Sunday Ticket should really be at the top of your list, the app allows you to stream every single NFL game on either your iPad or iPhone, and the HD video quality is gorgeous. It works pretty much exactly as sports broadcasting in the 21st Century should. Not only do you get to enjoy each and every game, but the app also lets you tune into the RED ZONE CHANNEL®, which highlights games when a team is about to score.

You can check out all the highlights from every game, and check up on scores and the statuses of games in progress. There’s also a feature to see which games are next week, so you can set your schedule accordingly. The app also has an “Instant Stat” feature that lets you track your fantasy football players and get their stats instantly.

Game Pass

For users outside the USA Game Pass offers a way to watch NFL games online, streaming in HD quality.

Watch every 2012 NFL Preseason and Regular Season game streaming live or on demand on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad with an NFL Game Pass subscription. Coaches Film with new Telestrator feature (iPad only), Condensed Games, Big Play Markers, scores, schedules, stats, and full play-by-play analysis are all available for live and on-demand games. Everything you love about NFL Game Pass, all on your iOS device.

Conference Video Apps Big TenACC,  and Pac-12, free with subscription

The Only Five Apps You Need to Watch Football This Fall (Updated)

With Autumn comes not only the NFL season but also College football season, with more than 115+ teams in the FBS, chances are that your favorite team’s games won’t show in your area. This is where conference video apps come to your aide, the app provides live video of games exclusive to the Big Ten Network, the Pac-12 Network, and whatever passes for the ACC network.

NFL ’12 Free Universal App ($10 in-app purchase for some features)

The Only Five Apps You Need to Watch Football This Fall (Updated)

NFL ’12 provides live scores and stats but it also shows some NFL Network content live and live audio streaming on the iPad with an in-app purchase of $10. This NFL Network content includes NFL Fantasy Live for fantasy football maniacs and the Thursday Night Football games that are only shown on NFL Network and in-market local affiliates.

Again, it’s not great, but it’s a way to get access to games outside of your market at relatively low cost if you’re not an NFL Network subscriber, and I give it some credit for not requiring a cable or satellite subscription to join in.
