Earlier today Mobile ecosystems analyst firm, VisionMobile, released their fourth Developer Economics report. The report looks at what platform developers prefer, as well as which App Store makes the most money for their developers. It can’t really come as a surprise to anyone that iOS leads as the most preferred platform for developers, 48 percent of respondents stated that this was their lead platform. Android and BlackBerry are next, with many developers reporting them as a main development target.

What was interesting is that the report states that developers develop for neither iOS nor Android only make about half the revenue of those that do. Furthermore 38% of developers state that advertising is the most important part of app development.

According to the table above the user base for Android and iOS is the same, however the development cost and learning curve for iOS is much lower than for Android. Furthermore Development environment, documentation, app discovery, and revenue potential is according to the developers surveyed better on iOS.
