Once again, Adult Swim takes a game with a simple concept and adds a plot and some humor to make something unique. Left on its own, Bring Me Sandwiches!! could seem very much like a Super Mario clone, but the creators decided to add some zest by making it about a sandwich delivery guy named Jimmy Nugget who must feed sandwiches to a hostile alien invader until the E.T.’s hunger is sated.
The app has cute, quick cartoons between levels that explain the plot plus some clear tutorial spoken by other characters on the screen to explain exactly how to achieve goals and score points in the game. You have to collect raw materials for the sandwiches and feeding them to the invaders. As the game continues, the invaders ask for more exotic ingredients (such as cats).
In the settings, you can control the methodology that moves Jimmy around. The choices are tilting the device, touching (or swiping) or a set of virtual buttons. You can also control where the run and jump controls appear. Thankfully, the game also allows you to turn off the somewhat annoying background music (which is the only negative thing about this game).
There is also a “Food Journal” section which shows you more and more types of food as you collect for the aliens and complete levels. It’s a bit of a trophy room. Obviously, the entire game interacts with Game Center (and what game worth its salt doesn’t nowadays?).
The game is cute, fun and addictive, a bit like Super Mario Bros on acid. If you turn off the background music, then it’s well worth the dollar.
