Okay, who owned a Commodore 64 way back when?  I didn’t, but I had friends that did.  Back then, it was state of the art graphics and sound.  Now, it’s an app that comes with multiple games and doesn’t take up too much space on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

This app is the most retro thing I’ve played since Space Ace.  The eight bit graphics are pretty laughable now.  The one negative I can say is that it’s somewhat annoying to have to switch between the player controls and the joystick.  Obviously there wasn’t enough screen space to have both the controls and the joystick at the same time.

The game comes with a eight games built-in and it wouldn’t surprise me if more were on the way for an additional fee.  I’m fine with that if the games in question are ones that I’ve heard of.  I’m secretly hoping they’ll get a primitive version of Donkey Kong.  The games included are tennis, soccer, Dragon’s Den, Arctic Shipwreck, Lemans, Jack Attack and Jupiter Lander.  I’ve never heard of any of these games and never played them on the Commodore 64.  I can only wonder if they’re games created specific for this virtual version.

Overall, it’s a cool emulator to get and has the same multiple-games-in-one appeal of the AppBox Pro.  It’s like eight games in one.  If you can handle the primitive graphics, it’s worth the five bucks.

In conclusion, I will say that if anybody develops an Atari 2600 emulator for the iPhone, I’m in.
