The one thing I always thought was missing on the iPhone was a speech dialer.  This feature is an absolute must in today’s world (especially since I can get pulled over and get a ticket for using a cell phone in my state).

Cactus is a simple, easy to use, Free (currently) speech dialer for your iPhone.

I downloaded the app and immediately started to use it to place a few calls.  "Call Dan Mobile", I said, and the app came back with Dan’s correct numbers, "Call Lee Home", again, worked as advertised.  "Call Dad", oh oh, that didn’t work, "Call Dad", nope.  Not working on that one.  I tried a few more (30 or so), and found that 9 out of 10 worked great.  For me, that is probably close enough for a place on my iPhones front page.

The interface is very easy to use– simply hold a large button down and say "Call John Home", the app thinks for a few seconds and then brings up the result(s).  You can control whether you want multiple results or just single results in the settings.  I also changed the setting for automatically launching the call and it worked like a charm (you may want to keep this setting off until you get comfortable with the apps ability to match your voice).  You can also set the app to launch the contact’s main number rather than provide a full list of numbers.

Quick Take

Value:  Good
Would I Buy Again:  Yes
Learning Curve: None.
Who is it for:  Anyone who wants to stay safe while driving on the road or is too lazy to hit the numbers on the phone to dial!
What I like:  Works Well, Free, Easy to Use, and I don’t have to "train" the system to my voice.
What I Don’t:  If it worked 100%, but thats wishful thinking. 🙂

Final Statement:  Great little utility, which has found its way to my iPhone’s front screen.  Definately worth a look at the current price.

Read the Developer's Notes:
Cactus is a free voice dialer for the iPhone.  It allows you to call any contact in your address book by saying commands like:* "Call Kate Bell"* "Call Anna mobile"* "Call David Jones at home"Because Cactus runs completely on your device, it does not send any private information such as contact list to any server and works fast even on an EDGE data connection.  Customizable settings allow you to;* tune the system's sensitivity by displaying one or several results for each command* set the system to automatically launch calls or not* use Main numbers by default for contacts that have several numbersCactus was written by Antoine Raux.  It is based on PockedSphinx, an open source speech recognition engine for embedded devices developed at Carnegie Mellon University (big thanks to David Huggins-Daines, the main author of PockedSphinx).O U R   T A K E  .  .  .
