So you want to start a business and while you have all product you need to sell you are still looking for the right solution for managing your sales. Registers can be expensive and leasing credit card terminals is a pain. Cashier is a full featured point of sale app that offers many levels of integration and features to suit whatever your level of need is. With such an expanse between the mom and pop shop and a large retail location, does cashier have the versatility to make your sales easy?

Cashier LLC offers a wide range of solutions on their site from web apps to hardware for scanning products or complete cash drawer POS computers. For this review we will be just looking at the iPhone app which gives you an idea of what Cashier can do for you and if it is the right choice. The app is free to download, and can be used in its most basic function without any monthly costs. Cashier LLC also offers several options for accepting credit cards and running multiple registers, but again we will not be looking at that aspect today.

When you first start Cashier, there is a lot of information about your company that will need to be added to allow Cashier to do its thing. It will require a free sign up at their site as well as store information and contacts. You can also add store hours and other misc information that will show up on your receipts. Once that is finished, you can start adding products. Products can be sorted by department and category, or if your list isn’t large you can simply put them all in one. There is an option for tax, and you set a quantity if you want to keep a basic inventory. The app essentially ignores the inventory so if you have an other system you may disregard it.

There are also buttons for customer lists and keeping track of a register. While all these features can integrate with systems that Cashier LLC sells, you can also utilize your iOS device as a register of sorts without all the auto updating. The buttons are large and easy to use even of an iPhone, though I think the app is best used on an iPad.

New Sales is where the action happens. The interface is again large and easy to navigate. You can either use scan barcodes if you have the barcode scanner attachment, or take a picture with your iOS device of the bar code to locate the item. Alternatively, you can just tap on items to add them. Tapping on items in the shopping cart gives you options to increase or decrease quantities, or give discounts. Once you are satisfied, you tap pay and you are given the various choices for payment. If you have the merchant service with Cashier LLC you will be able to take credit cards. Otherwise you will have to stick with cash or check. Finally, you have your receipt which can be emailed to any email, or you may select a customer that you already have in your system.

There is a lot you digest with Cashier. It offers a clean interface with many options for the retailer. I liked that how the app gave your features like quantity and customers but then didn’t require you to use them if it didn’t fit with your business’s system. I was disappointed that you couldn’t add images from your iOS device to items, but all things considered, Cashier does the job.

When compared to some similar apps like Paypal or Square, Cashier has many more features to offer users that want a traditional POS system. That said, the free app is quite limited and to fully utilize all the Cashier has to offer requires a monthly fee. If this works for you, then Cashier could be an affordable alternative to a full on POS computer.

Quick Take

Value:Good

Would I Buy Again:Maybe

Learning Curve:Moderate

Who Is It For:Store owners looking for a POS solution

What I Like:Many features available in the app that you are not required to use.

What I Don't Like:Requires on going expense to fully utilize

Final Statement:Don't let that iPad sit idle, let it become your cashier.
