Castle Warriors is a fun single player strategy game where the goal is to capture all the castles on the map within a certain number of turns.  Each turn is one “day”—dusk to dawn.  The better you do in each ‘day’, the more reinforcements you get during your next turn.

Your adversary in this game is a variety of orcs, goblins, and other ‘bad guys’.

The interface is sort-of 3D;  I say sort of because it’s really a 2D map, but it’s rendered with a ‘fish-eye’ effect making it seem like 3D.

The user interface is well laid out—the map on the bottom left corner shows which troops are occupying which castles.  Across the top is a “sun” that moves from dawn to dusk as the day (turn) progresses.

In order to move your troops from one castle to another, you simply click on your castle, choose how many troops to move (some, half, most, or all) and touch the desired castle to move to.  The two sides will "battle" by either attacking an opponent’s castle, or by crossing paths while walking from one castle to another.

The developer note’s call Castle Warriors an RTS game.  I disagree.  It is definitely a strategy game, but nothing nearly as complicated as a true RTS; there is no control or build orders to maintain; no control on how the castles are upgraded, what types of “troops” you’ll have in you army, you can’t even control the paths your troops will take on the way from one castle to another.  This is not to say it isn’t an enjoyable game.  It is EXTREMELY enjoyable, but I was thinking it would be heavier on the "RTS" side.

Castle Warriors is a light hearted, fun filled, strategy game that will bring hours for any strategy gamer.

Quick Take

Value:High -- lots of fun to play

Would I Buy Again:Yes, it's a great game to pass some time.

Learning Curve:Very little learning curve. If it takes you more than one turn to master the controls I'd be suprised.

Who Is It For:Strategy and Casual gamers; it's not for hard-core RTS gamers though.

What I Like:I like the controls, and the pacing of the game is great; it keeps you engaged but not overly so.

What I Don't Like:It'd be nice if you could zoom out or if the map showed where the troops were. Because it doesn't show enough information, I tended not to use it after the first day or so.

Final Statement:Castle Warriors is a fun game that I'll recommend to any strategy gamer.

Read the Developer's Notes:
Battle for Queen and Country: skewer a few clichés along the way.
Queen Mynera rules a lovely land threatened by despicable foes. Of course, you are her only hope. Castle Warriors is a tensely fought, tightly paced RTS game set in a landscape that gently tweaks all those fantasy tropes from the games of yore. Lead armies of warriors, veterans, warlords, heroes and even giants, against goblins, orcs, ogres, trolls and demons. You must take and defend castles, use superior strategy and tactical timing to gain advantage before claiming victory.

You must Creep on the Borderlands, defend Waterseep, and find the Temple of Elemental Good. And what possible trouble could a few missing magic items be? Hmmmm…
