App Update – Web Apps

By

On October 14, 2008

One app that just received a nice, but unnoticed, update is Web Apps.

Web Apps is a great free app that reminds us that there are still iPhone and iPod Touch web apps out there (the bread and butter of iPhone usage during its first year).

Web Apps provides easy access to hundreds of web based apps and offers numerous ways to organize and sort apps. When you see an app that interests you, it is  just a tap away thanks to Web Apps. Best of all, the apps open up within the application so you can easily close them and move to another without the hassle of the Safari browser with its limit of just 8 pages.

The update…

App Update – FileMagnet

By

On

One of the first, and still one of the best apps for moving files to and from your iPhone and iPod Touch.  We reviewed it way back in the dark ages of iPhone apps (July 16th) and liked it a lot.

It has now been updated to version 1.1 and, as a result, is more useful than ever.

This update not only includes memory usage, upgraded graphics and bug fixes but it…

Bye-Bye NetNewsWire and Hello Byline

By

Since iPhone 2.0 was first released I have been using NetNewsWire as my RSS reader of choice. It worked well and, after a round or two of updates, did the job of allowing access to my RSS feeds on the go for me. It synched well with NewsGator and the desktop version of NetNewsWire, allowed offline access to feed updates and let me add new posts to my clippings.

It had one MAJOR flaw however that still isn’t fixed– once a post was added to my clippings I could not access it from the app. Not being able to come back and actually read the text after I clipped it was a huge limitation for me. Even so, however, I stuck with NetNewsWire.

I tried Byline, an RSS reader that syncs with Google Reader, but found that it was not only expensive ($9.99 at the time) but also not as useful to me as NetNewsWire. After today’s update, however… it is

App Update – TextGuru

TextGuru is an amazing text editor for the iPhone and iPod Touch that just keeps getting better.

I was recently speaking to somone who said they loved everything about the iPhone but the lack of a physical keyboard and inability to use the device for creating real text. That alone kept him from getting one.

I pulled out my iPhone, started TextGuru and showed him not only how quickly I could type on the device, especially in landscape, but how powerful an app like TextGuru is. It truly is one powerful text app.

Well, another update makes TextGuru even more powerful. It…

App Update – eReader

The Stanza ebook reader might be tremendously popular, but I remain partial to eReader. The initial software release on July 11th was good and the two updates since then have greatly improved the usability of the app.

While the iPhone and iPod Touch might not offer the screen real estate of the Kindle or the Sony Reader, the experience of reading on the diminutive device is rather good.

Excellent software such as eReader certainly makes a difference and a new update makes eReader even better.

Version 1.3 add some nice, but not earthshaking, features. These include…

New In The App Store – WritePad

Yes, handwriting recognition has come to the iPhone!

WritePad is a free app that was just released in the App Store. According to the developer it makes handwriting recognition-based text input on the iPhone a reality.

As someone who spent years using a tabletpc, I am glad to see this developement. At the same time, however, I am a bit skeptical about handwriting rec on the iPhone, especially since it is not a stylus-based device.

So how does it work??

We just downloaded it and will let you know our impressions soon. In the meantime, you can try it yourself as it is available HERE in the App Store.

Say Where- Now I’m Truly A Believer

The other night my wife and I were in the car with my in-laws headed to Hoboken for dinner at Lua, a trendy Latin fusion resaurant in Hoboken, NJ. It was during the trip that I discovered how great the app Say Where! is.

Before we get to the story, however, a quick video overview of the app…

Wik-Off Redux

As a newbie to the whole iPod/iPhone phenomenon (I now am the proud owner of an iPod Touch), I have become amazed at the plethora of applications available via the iTunes App Store that fundamentally do the same thing.  For example, there are several applications available for the sole purpose of formatting Wikipedia to the iPod Touch rather than simply using Safari to navigate to Wikipedia.com.  These applications tailor such searches for easier Wikipedia navigation on the iPod Touch screen in case you having the craving for research while travelling.

With that in mind, I took a fresh look at four of these Wikipedia applications, offer my thoughts on each and decide which I like best.

App Update: Toodledo

By

On October 12, 2008

I’m quickly becoming a huge fan of Toodledo, the native iPhone iPod Touch app from Toodledo that works with their web-based take program.

While Appigo’s ToDo and Notebook are powerful apps that also work with Toodledo.com, Toodledo’s iPhone app is not only far less expensive ($3.99 vs $9.99), but it also offers a far greater selection of ways to organize and view tasks. For example, you can arrange by date, priority, tag, context and more.

According to the developer-

Toodledo is a powerful task manager that will help you stay organized and be more productive. You can use Toodledo as a standalone application, or you can have it seamlessly synchronize everything with Toodledo.com, one of the most popular online task managers. Toodledo is flexible enough to work with many different styles of list management. You can use the popular GTD methodology, or you can use your own system. You can keep things simple, or you can add as much complexity as you need. Keeping track of your to-do list has never been easier.

Only a few days after it was initially released, Toodledo has already received a big update. Toodledo Version 1.1…

App Update: Maildash – Now With SMS Support

By

We recently took a look at a couple of programs that allow you to quickly shoot off pre-formatted messages. Maildash came out on top.

With Maildash you can quickly launch the app, choose a recipient and a prepared message and tap "Send". In seconds your message is on the way. It is a simple, quick and powerful way to send emails quickly. Moreover, Maildash has the added benefit of allowing you to personalizing the message templates automatically.

While there is a bit of a learning curve with Maildash the time spent getting to know the app is well worth it!

Maildash received an update tonight that makes it even more powerful! The update adds-
