Jennifer’s iPod Touch – To Buy Or Not To Buy

By

On January 12, 2009

I ALMOST purchased an iPHONE yesterday!  Yes, you read that right!

I do LOVE my Pink Katana II, but the SPRINT Sero fair and flexible plan  is (IMHO)awesome but does not give me enough minutes. I run out of anytime minutes each month.  I have unlimited nights and weekends but these are not helpful for work.  If  I could stay within my minutes I would have a glorious $30 phone bill for 500 minutes, with unlimited text, data, mobile to mobile and nights and weekend calls too.  But I am now paying, on average, $100 a month because of over-usage on minutes.   When I inquired about increasing my minutes the options were not so positive.  My bill would jump to $100.00 and I would not get unlimited texts. So I started thinking that it is a good time as any to  upgrade to a smartphone.

Monday Promo-Code Giveaway

By

Bret’s been reviewing two of Chillingo’s offerings, Dungeon & Hero and Marble Maze Ultra. We’ve got two codes to give away for each.

Bret is having a great time playing reviewing Dengeon and Hero. In his first look he stated

I had high hopes for Dungeon & Hero when I first saw it listed in the App Store, so I wasn’t going to be easily impressed. But to my delight it did impress me, greatly in fact… My overall thought my first few days playing it, BUY IT! This game is easily worth the price tag attached to it, and it’s great if you like RPG’s. Dungeon & Hero is probably going to be the first game I am going to keep after reviewing to enjoy on my own time.

"Buy it" Bret says. "Win it" I say.  (Details after the break)

He’s also liking Marble Maze Ultra a whole lot, writing that it

…takes an older idea and transforms it into a fun game all over again. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game and will definetly keep it for a long time in the hopes of more levels being added.

To enter for a chance to win one of these great games…

Don’t Call It Internet Radio- Starplayer, A Pre-release Look UPDATED

By

On

What do you call satellite radio when it is delivered over wifi? I don’t know what name to use but I would definitely call it "terrific".

Thanks to my Wayne from Gear Diary I’ve spent a good part of the last few days taking a look at a preview version of Starplayer an upcoming application for streaming Sirius or XM satellite radio through the iPhone. While it’s lacking some of the capabilities of the Pioneer system I had a few years ago (it looked like it was a throwback to the 70s but was  technologically advanced enough to be able to  buffer a few hours of music for listening when a stream was not available), they’ve done a very nice job with the application.

iPhone Apps + Google Docs: The Good, The “Eh” and The Ugly

By

On January 11, 2009

Every now and then a reminder of the growing dichotomy in the App Store comes along.  Increasingly, the "good" apps are truly good and the "ugly" apps are truly ugly. And yes, there are plenty in between.

Such a disparity is apparent if you take a look at three  applications in each work with Google’s growing prowess in handling  documents. The three applications —

The "Good" – gNotes

The "Ugly"- MiGhtyDocs

(And then there’s" The "Eh"- Documents

Let’s start ith the baaaaaad and work our way toward the good.

Jennifer’s iPod Touch Adventure: 1st Call For Help

By

On January 10, 2009

They say admitting you have a problem is the first step, so I guess seeking help for the declared problem is step two? Having very little computer knowledge and even less confidence in my abilities I find it hard to believe I am writing for this or any tech related site. But I am hoping this is the beginning of what is to become the "best education" the web can offer!

Yesterday my wonderful (usually) children and I enjoyed the greatly anticipated, by the children, snow day! I had my sites on a laundry list of chores I wanted to do on my bonus day off.  Exciting things like taking down the Christmas tree, cleaning a closet and their bedrooms, preparing my lesson plans for next week, dishes, and laundry just to name a few.

My children thought it would be a good day to fight over everything.  My solution?  I quickly offered one child my laptop and the other my Touch. Bothdevices  offer a great many games and the ability to occupy the darlings for a while. I don’t want you to get the impression that I did not want to spend some time with the kids.  That too was part of my list, but I had things to do first.
My daughter opted for the Touch, and immediately searched the applications store and before long wanted to download a game or 3. I still regret showing her that little trick a few nights ago, but desperate times call for deperate measures.

What’s Tethering Worth To You?

By

On

As much as I really don’t want to give AT&T wireless another penny, I am pretty darn excited about the possibility of an official tethering plan so that you can use your iPhone as a wireless modem.

I have a copy of (the notorious, banned) netshare on my iPhone but I’ve been hesitant to use it for fear of the "AT&T bandwidth police" tracking me down and hassling me.

My iPhone is great for surfing the web and now that I have a copy of LogMeIn on it I have the ability to access and control my home iMac no matter where I might be. But there are still times when I would really like to be able to use my notebook when out and about and not near WiFi. So I’ve been planning on signing up for a tethering plan as soon as it becomes available even at the reported $30 a month charge that has been widely reported.

Now, however, there are rumors running around the web that the plan might actually be significantly cheaper

Now THIS Is A Funny App : Teen Torture

By

On

Now this app just cracks me up. The mosquito ringtone is used by teens because those of us a bit (a lot?) older can’t hear it. Teen Torture turns that on it’s head by using the sound to annoy teens. Just start up the app, choose what age group to annoy by selecting a specific frequency and get busy bugging them. If you aren’t a teen you won’t hear it but any teens in you area sure will! No, I’m not spending $.99 on this, but any app that can make me laugh on a cold NJ day at least deserves a post.

iTap vs. Air Mouse : A WOiP Head 2 Head

Using the iPhone and iPod Touch as a wireless remote is something many have thought of and there are plenty of options in the App Store to do just that.

Two applications, however, stand out in terms of price and quality: iTap and Air Mouse. They both do what they say, and do it well. And each have key points that make them worth a serious look at.
