Have you been wanting to expand your cooking repertoire, but didn’t know where to look? Maybe you have tried asian, hispanic,  or european styles and are wanting something more. OctoberSoft may have an answer for you with their app Caucasian Cuisine. A quick review of this app will show how it takes the cook book styling without being limited to just the recipes.

Caucasian food is consists of traditional cuisines of the regions around Georgia, Armenia, Chechnya, etc. It is a rich culture that shares its richness in its food. These mouthwatering morsels are captured so wonderfully in the pictures at the top of each recipe. Recipes are separated into categories like main course, sweets, salads, and even drinks. From within each recipe you have an ingredients list and then the preparation instructions. If this is a recipe that you come back to a lot, you can tap the heart in the upper right corner to add it to your favorites tab.

With some of the more exotic choices you may find yourself having to do a bit of shopping to find certain items. One feature that makes it easier to get your shopping list together is the shopping cart next to each ingredient item. Tapping this causes a buzz on the phone and adds that item to the shopping list tab. You could feasibly use this solely as your shopping list if you are choosing items from the app alone. Tapping the shopping cart button doesn’t give you a visual indication that it has been tapped, but it does buzz to confirm. I could see this being a bit confusing to users, but subsequent taps do not add anything to the shopping cart, so it appears to be a minor issue.

If you are using the shopping list, you can also add in items that are not in the recipes directly from the shopping list tab. I have always thought that cooking apps should offer integration with TODO apps like iOS 5’s Reminder. That way if you are using other cooking apps you can gather all your shopping lists into one place. Caucasian Cuisine’s developers did say that have this as a possible future feature which would definitely give them an edge over other cooking apps and would hopefully start a positive trend.

Caucasian Cuisine also has a timer which is a nice addition so you don’t have to leave the app to set a timer while cooking. It reminds me of apps like Intelligentsia Coffee’s app and the developer has stated that a future update will add a connection between the recipes and the timer making it easy to set specific timers while reading the recipe.   Finally, there is a helper app that shows you recipes based on the ingredients you list. This is great for times when you have ingredients, but you want to know what you can make with them.

Overall, Caucasian Cuisine is a decent app that offers a lot of good content. I think that it could have gone further in many ways to improve the interface of the app and it may do just that as the developer continues to improve on the app, but where it counts, which is the food, it has scored a big hit. For $1.99 it is cheaper than any cook book so hop over to the app store and buy your copy of the Caucasian Cuisine.
