Chromixa struck me as really simplistic, and yes, boring at first.  Good thing my curiosity got the better of me in the end. I downloaded it (although I expected to delete the application from my iPhone within just a few minutes of trying it out).  After almost an hour of playing it, the game had apparently proven me wrong. Make no mistake: Don’t let the seemingly old-fashioned look of Chromixa deter you from installing it on your device. For all its simplicity, Chromixa is one of the most enjoyable games I’ve played on the iPhone in recent memory.

As its name suggests, Chromixa is played by mixing colors, specifically the primary colors red, green, and blue. You, the player, should be aware that mixing red and green produces yellow, mixing red and blue begets magenta, and mixing green and blue yields cyan, as you would be working with all six colors. Chromixa is essentially a puzzle-solving game wherein puzzles are variations of the classic jigsaw, but instead of completing the big picture what you need to do is arrange the tangram-like shapes on the screen so as to come up with the desired color, keeping in mind the aforementioned rules in combining primary colors.

Moving the puzzle pieces around is performed using controls that are very easily understood even by someone new to the game. Simply tap to choose a shape you wish to move, then drag it toward the desired location. A ring also appears around the currently selected shape, and moving your finger along the ring’s circumference in effect rotates the shape. It couldn’t get any more intuitive than that, and a new player is bound to grasp the specifics of the controls in no time, especially with the help of the built-in video tutorial that also explains how the puzzles are solved, that is, if it doesn’t cause the app to crash.

Like in most puzzle-solving games, the puzzles start out easy, then progress to more challenging levels. The more difficult levels are especially rewarding, both to the mind and the eyes, as more complex color combinations are involved. The mentally relaxing background music is also of note, as well as the similarly enjoyable mini arcade games that are unlocked throughout the game.

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:Yes.

Learning Curve:Medium. The video tutorial shipped with the game should do the trick.

Who Is It For:People who enjoy jigsaw- and tangram-like games.

What I Like:The charming old-school animations and stylings. Fun unlockable mini games.

What I Don't Like:Tends to crash when initiating the video tutorial.

Final Statement:Don't be color-blind to this game's charm. Chromixa is as smart as it is colorful.

Read the Developer's Notes:
Chromixa is a new and unique colour-blending puzzle game, designed specifically for the iPhone and iPod touch. Truly the first of its kind.Arrange shapes of light to complete beautifully designed puzzles. Based on the colours found within white light; red, green and blue combine to create new colours as shapes overlap. Like a jigsaw of light, your goal is to arrange the shapes to fill an outline with a single colour. As you complete puzzles, the points you earn can be used to unlock fun arcade-style mini games.Like all good puzzle games, Chromixa has a simple concept which creates progressively harder puzzles. A fun and addictive mental challenge for all ages!
