Are you like me and get frustrated at the limited number of video formats that the iPhone or iPod touch can play? Well, thanks for CineXPlayer there is one fewer format to worry about as this app can play the DivX AVI format.
Far be it from me to suggest anybody doing anything illegal but if you should ever do a web search on the term "torrent" and "movie", you would find that a hefty chunk of those available are in the DivX format. If you’re the unscrupulous sort that would take hard-earned money from Hollywood, then now you can watch the target of your theft on your device. Alternatively, several brands of digital camera also record movies in the AVI format, so it’s not all about theft.
The interface is good and easy to use. I like the look of it even better than the video library of the iPhone. You can play, pause, rewind and fast forward to any point in the video (provided you have a nimble finger to find the exact spot) and even lock the screen so it doesn’t rotate when the device is moved around.
As with the video library, the app remembers where you last left the movie in the event you have to suddenly shut the program off. The original iPad version of the app goes for $4 so $2 for the iPhone version is a bit of a bargain (although one has to wonder why not just make one universal version).
If the app had any negatives, it would be that it doesn’t play many formats outside of AVI. Why not MPEG or MOV?
However, overall, the app is definitely worth the purchase for that long plane ride for those videos you get outside of iTunes. Recommended.
