So, today we’re going to talk about a GPS navigation application called CoPilot Live NA by ALK Technologies. It’s a turn-by-turn speech-to-text navigation system for the iPhone. So, how does it work?
When downloading the App (it’s a very large 1.3 GB file) it will put all the maps onto your iPhone so you don’t need to have a cellular connection to use the GPS mapping. Upon opening it, you’ll get a screen that says Welcome to Copilot Live and you’ll see a map that shows your current location. You can input your destination via zip codes, street names, intersections or points of interest.
After entering your destination, it will start your route, giving you information as you drive along the way. The GPS reception is very good and there are many settings that allow you to change the ability of Copilot live to track your vehicle, i.e., you can change the map display from 2D to 3D and you can change the setting from north up to heading up (which is the direction that you are driving).
CoPilot Live NA is quite an extensive application. It also allows for in-App purchases of live services such as weather, traffic, gas prices and local points of interest searches. A one year subscription to the live services is $19.99.
Having used CoPilot Live NA on a recent trip in a different city, it performed very well, never missing a turn. On a side note, there are three voices from which you can choose, to tell you the directions. Only one voice, Frank, gives you text-to-speech.
CoPilot Live NA is one of the better GPS Apps available. It’s priced right now at $34.99 in the App Store. Also, recently added to the APP store is CoPilot Live Directions, which is a FREE APP. You might want to check that out to see if that suites your needs before dishing out the $35 for the paid version.
