Based on their history with Checkers, Chess, Tic Tac Toe, and Dots, I’m not surprised that Optime has created a game based on mastermind.  Do you remember mastermind? That game with the pegs?  If not, here’s how it works.

Somebody picks a sequence of colors for their set of colored pegs.  Then, you try to pick the right colored pegs and put them in the correct holes (in the correct order).  After you make your guess, the other player "scores" it by telling you how many are the correct color, or correct color in the correct place.

By using this method of deduction, you can narrow down your choices until you manage to break the code.

Optime’s implementation isn’t excting—in fact it’s rather boring. Where tic tac toe had a nice sound effect, and cute chalkboard and chalk interface, this one is cut and dry. Not that there was much to the original game, but this doesn’t make it any more exciting or “fun”.

I thought the controls on this game were awkward as well; in particular, the ball with the X through it is supposed to go ‘back’. Why do you need to go back when you can just click on the circle to change it’s color?

Baring that, it’s a straightforward, nothing-new implementation of mastermind.   If you loved mastermind, you’ll like this. (If you thought mastermind was ok, don’t waste your bandwidth downloading this one.)

Quick Take

Value: High

Would I Buy Again:  Maybe

Learning Curve:  It took me one game to get the hang of it.  If the ui was a little smoother, then it would have only taken me a move or 2 to get it.

Who Is It For: People that can’t get enough of Mastermind.

What I Like:  It saves inprogress games, so you don’t have to start all over if you get interrupted by a phone call.

What I Don’t: I though the UI was clunky and the implementation didn’t add anythign to the board game.

Final Statement: If you LOVE Mastermind, don’t walk…RUN to the App store to get your copy.  But if you thought Mastermind was just ‘ok’, then this game isn’t for you.
