User Rating:I’m surprised more publishers haven’t figured out that you could do more with a digital screen to promote your book than a paper page. The creators of Crack69 (which is both the title of the book and the app, although the book uses a space i.e. "Crack 69") have. Be warned, though, it’s a massive 328 MB download.
The story itself is pretty good. Without going into details, it is a little bit science fiction, a little bit fantasy, a little bit pop culture, and a bit of several other genres that might appeal to various peoples.
Obviously, this is not a children’s story. Even the title "Crack 69" has certain euphemisms that cross into the realm of porn (although I didn’t find any explicit sex descriptions in part 1). Despite that, there are elements of children’s interactive books in this app, such as the ability to make illustrations move with the tap of a finger. It’s certainly good for keeping the attention of child-like adults. There is even a contest within the app to draw the anonymous author of the book. While this isn’t a kid’s book, it sure acts like one sometimes.
Overall, the app is well designed and easy-to-use. It emulates a book, but does more than just flip pages.
Note that this particular app, while free, is part 1 of a series. The remaining parts will cost $2.99 each and will eventually be available as an in-app purchase. For those who like books, this is the future of the genre (particularly since it seems self-published). Given it’s price, you have nothing to lose from downloading it now and seeing if you like where literature is going.
Quick Take
Value:High.
Would I Buy Again:At this price? Certainly.
Learning Curve:Low.
Who Is It For:Those that like books, games and technology.
What I Like:Good layout. More interesting than a traditional book.
What I Don't Like:I'm not big on paying for pieces of a story, but that's just me.
Final Statement:For the future of literature, look into Crack 69.
Genre. Multi-genre novel (dystopia, black comedy, parable, mystery, etc). You simply won`t be able to pull yourself away!
Design. The lively animation jumps to life in a witty manner and will no doubt put a smile upon your face more than once.
Who was this book written by? The author has chosen to remain anonymous, but did leave a note. “This book was written especially for the iPad. For those who manage to guess my real name, I can`t promise you anything… other than immortality”.
What is it about? If there`s one lesson the main protagonist takes away from the events of the story, it`s that giving up a part of yourself to the system only results in the system demanding even more of you.
How was it made? With real passion! This story is written by a truly inspired author and a worthwhile read for anyone seeking to attain true freedom of mind.
Bonus features, including an interactive game. Create a portrait of the author and think up a new name for him/her. The winner will be awarded a priz
