If you like to do Crossword Puzzles and enjoy ones with themes, then you should check out Crossword Light by Stand Alone, Inc.   After playing with it for some time, we think it’s one of the better puzzle games for the iPhone.

When you start the game, you’ll be presented with a screen of quick tips to help you navigate through the puzzle.  After you review the tips, touch Done and you will get a list of puzzles to choose from, listed by the puzzle name.  The puzzle names are actually themes for the different puzzles.  At the bottom of the screen is a button (which looks like a wheel) in the right-hand corner.  Touch this to change settings for solving the puzzle, communicating with your friends, and for changing the display and sounds.  Though there are many different settings, I’ll only highlight a few.  You can choose to show your mistakes when solving the puzzle, change the size of the keyboard, and choose to have sound effects.  In addition there is a Help button in the left-hand corner which has the puzzle tips.

To start the puzzle, touch the puzzle name.  You’ll be presented with the puzzle grid, a keyboard of letters at the bottom and a bar at the bottom with the definition for the particular row or column you are on. 

This game is loaded with features.  Various buttons at the top help you along while you try to solve the puzzle.  The hints button will give you some hints if you get stuck on a word – you can choose to reveal a letter or even get the full answer.  Info gives you information about the puzzle like who created it, the size of the puzzle and the time it takes to solve it.  Clues will give you the clues in order.

Crossword Light is easy to play.  Just touch the box in the column or row you want to solve, and the clue will pop up at the bottom.  When you have the answer just touch the letters on the keyboard in order and they will be filled in the blocks on the puzzle.  If you make a mistake, you can touch the box and then touch the delete key (denoted by the x).  If you get stuck on a word, touch the Clues button at the top.  To go through all the clues, just swipe the list to page through them.  Clues can also be sifted through by touching the arrow at the bottom of the screen where the clues are listed.

Crossword Light is available in the App Store for FREE.  There is also a version called Crosswords which is available for 9.99.  If you are an avid crossword puzzle fan, you’ll want to get this.  The 9.99 version offers new puzzles every day which are downloaded from the various newspapers who publish their crosswords online.  Both versions are well done and will definitely enrich your brain and build your vocabulary!
