There are many Rubik’s Cube emulators available in the App Store. Many of them, like Cube Master, are free. However, not many of them also come with a step-by-step instruction for solving the cube’s puzzle. Cube Master is more of an instruction manual than an actual Rubik’s Cube.
The app itself is pretty simplistic. It opens with the solved cube and once the user clicks the Start button, the cube’s colors are scrambled. Working with the sides that are facing him or her, the user double-taps certain squares to rotate them (the exact nature of this tapping seems random as the user is apparently unable to control whether the rotation is horizontal or vertical).
Sadly, the solving of the puzzle is set to a timer that cannot be turned off. This is particularly distressing if you’re not very fast at solving the puzzle. If it turns out that you can’t solve the puzzle, the program shows you the steps and solves it for you (which makes for a nice animation).
The graphics of the program are simplistic and as a result it’s not the best Rubik’s Cube emulator out there, but at least it tries to teach the algorithms behind the puzzle. I found the whole app to be generally confusing in the time I was using it and am hoping that further tries will be met with less frustration.
Overall, if you want to learn how to solve the Rubik’s Cube and can overcome the difficulty in using the program in the first place, it’s worth the download.
