Sometimes the apps in the App Store are so pedantic that one cannot help but wonder how they got so popular. Cupcakes! allows the user to simulate the creation of a set of cupcakes without actually using a kitchen and then simulate eating them.
The app begins by presenting the user with a four-cake pan and letting him or her select from a bunch of differently colored cupcake liners. The user then selects the type of batter to use (red velvet is a personal favorite).
The cupcakes then go in the oven (it doesn’t matter for how long). After they are done, the device is shaken in order for the cupcakes to fall out of the pan. After which they are decorated with frosting and sprinkles. The user can either save or e-mail their designed cupcakes or "eat" them (which is basically rubbing over the cupcake to erase it).
There is an option menu to change aspects such as plate and tablecloth cover, whether to shake the device to remove the cupcakes from the pan, or turn on and off the app sound.
I can see the popular appeal of this app. It’s fun. It’s colorful. Who doesn’t like cupcakes? At the same time, I think it could be improved by actually teaching people how to make cupcakes rather than simulating steps that may or may not work in real life. For example, it doesn’t matter how long you put the batter in the oven for as the cupcakes never burn.
If you have a dollar to burn and like cupcakes, it’s a nice app. However, it’s certainly not one of those apps you can’t live without.

Final Statement:While a pastry fan, I fail to see why this app takes the cake.
