The iPad was once thought to be Steve Jobs’s attempt to save the dying newspaper industry. Only now, over a year after Apple’s iPad announcement, has the first iPad-only newspaper been released.
The Daily, as it is called, costs $39.99/year or 99¢/week after the included two week trial expires. The paperless newspaper opens with a beautiful animation. After this animation, the app will give you the option to receive push notifications for breaking news and will also try to find your location for weather updates. You can also select your zodiac sign for horoscope updates.
The newspaper receives "Over 100 pages of original content every single day of the year". The different sections for the day can be selected from the table of contents or the nice cover-flow-like home view. In this home view is an arrow in the bottom-right which, when pressed, allows access to video, article reading (this feature never begins reading the section that I have selected), article scrolling, and random article selection. Also available from this arrow are saved articles and settings.
One nice feature is the app’s landscape ability. Some features, such as slideshows and videos, require you to flip the iPad into landscape mode. This prevents you from having to load photos and videos which you do not want to see (videos can make the app temporarily sluggish).
The app is a nice look into the possible future. One question: will this app be able to remain relevant if/when other news sources such as USA Today or the New York Times begin offering a true digital newspaper on the iPad? My guess is no. This app is receiving so mucuh publicity simply because it is the first of its kind available.
Quick Take
Value:Medium, there are so many other news sources.
Would I Buy Again:Possibly.
Learning Curve:Low-medium.
Who Is It For:Those willing to switch to a new news medium.
What I Like:It is a truely interactive newspaper.
What I Don't Like:Due to hardware and/or software issues, the app is not currently running at 100%.
Final Statement:This newspaper may become yesterday's news.
The Daily has the depth and quality of a magazine but is delivered daily like a newspaper and updated in real-time like the web.
