User Rating:If you weren’t one of the lucky few who downloaded the official app of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in its opening days when it was offered for free, then you have my sympathies. As the tag line says, it’s simply the best @#$% app in fake news and the best app I’ve seen in a while.
Why? Well, to begin, I’m a fan of The Daily Show. In this polarized, depressing environment, The Daily Show is my breath of fresh air to put things into perspective. The app offers quotes and clips from the show for a variety of topics as well as Twitter feeds from many of the players involved.
Despite the cost, the app does have sponsors, which is a tactic that has never thrilled me. Apps with sponsorship should be offered free of charge. Of course, I did get it for free in its opening days, which is why this is a five-star review. If it bothers you, perhaps you should hold off until (if) it is offered for free again.
The app is easy to use with multiple tabs along the bottom for various sections including quotes, clips and topics. The topics even use a clever method of floating around. You can combine them by dragging them close together to see clips that cover the multiple topics.
In the end, this marvelous app does require a $2 investment. So does the CNN app. I guess you just have to pay for quality.
Quick Take
Value:High
Would I Buy Again:Hell, yes.
Learning Curve:Low.
Who Is It For:Liberal-minded intellectuals who love the news and satire.
What I Like:Practically everything.
What I Don't Like:Sponsorship for a paid app, but that could be me.
Final Statement:Unless you're a die-hard Glenn Beck fan, this should be on your must-have list of apps to own.
- Quote of the Day and companion video clips from the most recent episodes. Share them on Facebook and Twitter.
- In Topics you can search an archive of videos by categories. Drag words together to narrow results to a unique combination of topics.
- Under Schedule, find out about upcoming shows and guests, and set reminders for TV airings.
- You also get Twitter streams from a bunch of show-related users and topics, plus an interface for participating from your own Twitter account.
