This time last year there was a growing fad in mobile gaming. A game where you were pitched against others in a never-ending battle. The game? Draw Something! Since I enjoy drawing (in my iPad, iPhone and with watercolor in real life) I gave Draw Something a try. Wasn’t impressed. The tools were too basic to create nice drawings on a brim (come on, no pinch-zoom?) Also, a lot of the random players I found were as creative as a brick in a wall. Instead of drawing, or trying to draw, they just wrote (in drawing, of course) their word. Meh.

Describe it Free is close to Draw Something: there is a hidden word your opponent (or more precisely, your pal, because this is not a fight) has to guess using your clues. And how come these clues? In writing! Of course there is a set of banned words, for example to describe leather you can’t use cow, jacket or suede (among some others) but it does not hamper your creativity to use tanning, animal or shoes.

Game mechanics in Describe it Free are similar to other social games: you can be paired via Twitter, Facebook or random players through the developer’s servers. Once a player is available, the game starts and either you or your friend start describing a word. Oh, almost forgot to mention… There’s a time limit (45 seconds, to be precise) to describe or guess the word! Without this the game would be too easy. There’s also the possibility of buying beans as in-game currency to skip words that are too difficult. You also earn beans when your opponent guesses correctly your word (1 bean for easy words, 2 beans for medium words and a whooping 3 beans for hard words.)

Something I found appealing is that you can only have at most 10 games at the same time. Which was also one of the reasons Draw Something lost its appeal to me: when you start playing you tend to start many games… And then playing your turns regularly becomes a chore. With a hard limit of 10 games (which is a not-too-high-not-too-low) number of games, you can always be sure you won’t lose much time from going to your turns.

Describe it Free is obviously the free (ad-supported) version of Describe It.  So far I have not found the ads any disturbing, but if you’d rather play without ads (or help the developer create more great games) I recommend you get the paid version. And it is an universal app, so it works as well in your iPad as in your iPhone as in your iPad Mini (and optimized for iPhone 5.)

In short: Describe It (or Describe it Free) are great social games that you definitely have to try.
