User Rating:In the wake of the smash success of pre-Angry Birds App Store topseller Doodle Jump, a host of iPhone games tried to ride on the bandwagon by having their own doodle-inspired designs. Some were plain copycats, while a few others were quite refreshing, if not simply amusing. One game that belonged to the latter category was Doodle Movie Challenge.
Doodle Movie Challenge is still available from the App Store either as a free or a paid app. Between them is $1.99. It’s the price you have to pay if you want to get rid of mobile ads and if you want to add an online leaderboard capability over the free version.
But if you’re fine playing the game while not really obtrusive ads fly by at the top of the screen and if you can do without a score board tethered to an online database since you’re content with just bragging about your scores through Facebook and Twitter integration, which is also available in the free version, then perhaps you won’t have to shell out a couple of dollars to truly enjoy the game.
Doodle Movie Challenge, whether free or paid, offers minutes, if not hours, of raw entertainment. And I use the adjective liberally: the game is nothing if not a showcase of raw — that is, unabashedly amateurish — stick figure drawings of scenes, both instantly recognizable and relatively obscure, from popular films. Your competitive task, whether in the progressive levels mode or in the sudden death (timed) mode, is to correctly guess which among the four choices provided matches the doodle scene shown.
For instance, given a drawing of a pair of apparently male stick figures standing on what appears to be an escalator and provided a quartet of choices consisting of four film titles (Wag the Dog, Twins, Tootsie, Rain Man), you must within a reasonable span of time decode the drawing to be a representation of that scene in Rain Man with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise.
Not all doodles are so easily guessed though, with many of them depicting scenes from a number of popular film series, such as James Bond, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Pirates of the Carribbean, and Harry Potter. Once you encounter a scene with Lethal Weapon 1 to 4 as the choices, then you’d realize that the game isn’t as simple as it sounds, even as it features juvenile works of art.
Quick Take
Value:Medium.
Would I Buy Again:Probably.
Learning Curve:Practically zero.
Who Is It For:Movie buffs.
What I Like:The (deliberately?) unattractive drawings.
What I Don't Like:The (deliberately?) unattractive drawings.
Final Statement:The doodles look like they're done by a four-year-old, but years of movie watching experience is definitely required to really win in this game.
You will be entertained by the humorous drawings while testing your knowledge of your favorite movies.
