User Rating:I have a special place in my heart for the classics of my youth. That’s why I have such apps as C64 and Space Ace. For those unaware, Doom hails from the early to mid 90’s as one of the first networked first-person shooters for the PC (and other platforms, but I played it on the PC). Descendants of the game include Duke Nukem, World of Warcraft and MMORPG in general.
Recreated for the iPhone and iPod Touch, Doom is exactly as I remember it. The iPhone version contains all four episodes of the original game (which then led to Doom II). One aspect that makes this version different is the ability to interchange the type of controls you have to move around and shoot. There is a pre-defined set of shapes, sizes and locations and the user can pick the one that works best for him or her.
As with every incarnation of Doom, there is single player and multiplayer modes. You can also watch demos of the game if you’re just interested in watching monsters being shot rather than participating.
The graphics are slightly primitive for what can be done today, but like the original Star Wars trilogy, the game is timeless. I actually like the fact that the creators retained the original look of the game. Since you’re fighting horrible monsters anyway, does it matter if they’re slightly pixelated?
For a terrific first-person shooter, I recommend downloading Doom (provided you have the seven bucks). Now if I could only remember when I put those cheat codes.
Quick Take
Value:High.
Would I Buy Again:Quite probably.
Learning Curve:Low to medium.
Who Is It For:Video game historians and first-person shooter enthusiasts.
What I Like:Brilliant recreation of the original
What I Don't Like:Price. I think $5 is the sweet spot for this particular game.
Final Statement:Virtually a must-have for iPhone gamers.
