Have you heard about Netflix streamed movie rentals?  Well, if not, you will soon.  When you want to rent a movie, do you trudge to the movie store, hope they have what you want and then trudge back home disappointed?  Or, do you wait for your movie to come in the mail and then you have to remember to send it back?  Well, the old-fashioned way of renting movies is a thing of the past.   Welcome to streaming – the new way of viewing movies.

Netflix, which can be accessed through your computer, will allow you to stream movies, concerts and TV shows right to your TV from the Internet using a special device.  There are several devices which you can choose from but right now, we’ll talk about one – Roku.  The Roku device, once hooked up to your TV, will allow you to stream movies from Netflix..  So, you ask, what does this have to do with the iPhone?  Here goes.  An App called DVPRemote by Phil Irey allows you to control your Roku box right from your phone  – very cool.

Here’s how DVPRemote works.  Open the App and it looks for a Roku box on your network.  When it finds the device you can then label where the device is located (i.e., living room, bedroom, etc.) and then you’re finished.  All the functions of the Roku device can now be controlled by your iPhone.  That’s all there is to it.  You can start, stop, and scroll through the Netflix menu using your iPhone.  It’s a great App and it’s available in the App Store for .99

Read the Developer's Notes:
The DVPRemote app enables an iPhone or iPod touch to function as a wireless remote control for a Roku Digital Video Player (DVP), also known as the Netflix Player by Roku. Commands are sent from DVPRemote to the Roku DVP being controlled using WiFi. All functions provided by a standard Roku DVP infrared remote control (i.e. Home, Up, Down, Left, Right, Select, Rewind, Play/Pause, and Forward) are supported by DVPRemote.IMPORTANT: The Roku Digital Video Player to be controlled must be accessible from a WiFi connection on the iPhone or iPod touch running DVPRemote for this application to work properly. (The Roku DVP can be connected to the internet by either hardwired ethernet or WiFi.)
