It’s finally happened.  eBay has cracked under the pressure of that upstart competitor Craigslist that isn’t even in the business of maximizing profits and released a classifieds apps all their own.  It’s tough to say if it will work.  Craigslist has a big following in terms of classified and eBay is mostly known for auctions, but stranger things have happened.

The app itself is free, so it’s tough to argue the price.  On the other hand, so is Craigslist.  But they haven’t released a free reader for their site.  Yet.

The interface for the app is far more pleasing (I particularly like the "grass" at the bottom of the screen) but in terms of functionality it’s a Craigslist clone.  There are categories (without those nasty "adult" categories found on the competitor), the capability of search, the ability to post, and the ability to "bookmark" listings in the Watch List.  Use of the app is fairly intuitive.

Of course, there are nowhere near as many listings on this app as are found on Craigslist.  An iPhone app certainly does help, but in the end eBay is a profit-generating mechanism and it seems unlikely they can compete with the philosophies of Craig Newmark.

eBay Classifieds are not as "free speech"-y as Craigslist, but they are safer.  If you have a child seeking to buy from a classifieds section, then eBay Classifieds would be a better choice than Craigslist.  But for content, stick with the original.

Quick Take

Value:Low, but only because of a lack of content.

Would I Buy Again:For free? Yes.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Those seeking a Craigslist alternative.

What I Like:Nice interface.

What I Don't Like:Lack of content. This app needs to get more popular.

Final Statement:eBay Classifieds have nothing I currently want to buy.
