If you have an iPhone and play games, then it is very likely you have a game made by the great Ngmoco Studio that has brought some of the signature iPhone games like Rolondo, and Elimination. The later, in fact, has spawned a new game that takes advantage of what the new iPhone has to offer gamers. Gun Range makes use of the iPhone 4’s gyroscope and improved resolution to serve up a quick and dirty target practice game that will find a soft spot in both the casual gamer, as well as the FPS crowd’s heart.

Those that are familiar with Eliminate will notice that the cleaver has trimmed much of the original game away. Gone is the multiplayer arena combat. In its place is a fixed position game with silohette targets that move into position and stop. If you imagine this game as a carnival shooting gallery without all the cheap cartoon knock-off dolls hanging from the side, then you will have a pretty good idea about what Gun Range is all about. This isn’t nessesarility a mark against the game, I am instead exspressing the change in game style from one to the other. Where fans of First Person Shooters would find themselves right at home with eliminate, Fans of reaction games and other casual flash games will find alot to offer with gun range.

The weapons are all modeled after real firearms, each with different clip size, reload time, and accuracy.  Every weapon has it’s own set of levels that range from warehouses to multi-story residences. Targets come in from all sides of the screen, which means you have to keep scanning to make sure there isn’t one you missed. Accuracy is not tracked, but using too many bullets to take down you targets can leave you reloading while targets come and go. Each level is judged by the number of targets hit. As you complete levels you earn credits that will unlock new weapons.

The tracking and control of the game is excellent thanks to the new gyroscope in the iPhone 4. The game "zeros" the gryo each level so if you are playing on your back, or sitting up, you will wont have to change any settings. The sensitivity can be adjusted, but I found the default to be just about perfect for most levels. The high resolution and small screen of the iPhone 4 does lead to some of the more distance targets being very challanging to hit but not impossible. I have noticed a bug where the level loads to a black screen where the game continues, but the screen is black. Restarting the game seems to fix the problem, but I hope that an update will fix this issue soon. While there isn’t much to more to Gun Range, it stands as a fun and quick example of the new gyroscope and how it can be used in future games to great effect.
