User Rating:Family Feud is an American game show tradition right up there with Jeopardy and The Price is Right, and it has found itself ported to almost every platform that has enough power to run even basic graphics. So it is no surprise that Ludia has finally brought the famous game show to the iOS with compatibility and for both the iPhone/iTouch and the iPad.
For the two of you that have never seen The Family Feud game show on TV, that game is basically all about guessing the most common answers to questions. Each question is polled ahead of time and the top six answers are placed on the board. Each time a team misses an answer the other team gets a chance to steal the score from the other team. The first team to three hundred points moves on to a final round where they must get a combined total of two hundred points from five answers to a single question. The idea is that you have to find the most commonly given answers to questions. Sometimes they are obvious, but sometimes your perception of what is a common answer doesn’t jive with the general public. The family that makes it to the end wins $20,000.
Unfortunately the money in the iOS version isn’t real. You do have the opportunity to unlock costumes to customize your character. As you progress through each level the families become harder. When you are done facing off with the computer, you can also play party mode which lets you play against another person or team next to you. Family Feud is unfortunately missing any online play so you will have to scrape together some real human beings to enjoy the party mode. At times where a buzz in is needed it indicates areas on the screen that can be tapped to buzz in. This works great on the iPad with its large screen, but feels a little cramped on the iPhone. When it comes to answering questions, an on screen keyboard is augmented with word guessing which is fairly good at making available the right word so you don’t have to type as much. This feature is great when you are running out of time and need to type a long word. It is not clear if the app is using its own dictionary or the iPhone’s built in dictionary.
Either way, it works very well most of the time. The animation and host voice helps draw you into the game show and gives you the real feel that I love with other game show ports. Ludia has done a great job bringing a fun group game to the iPhone and iPad and inspire of the limitations of the iphone, has done a great job of making the game playable and fun. I hope Ludia continues to provide us with more great game shows, and perhaps even delve into some classic video game shows. Do I hear a vote for You Don’t Know Jack? If you like the TV show I highly recommend the iPhone game for some great feuding while on the go.
