The Final Fantasy series is probably one of the most successful RPG franchises in the world. So when the game’s creators, Square Enix, decided to port some of the games to iOS, you better have believed it was a huge deal. Recently, an updated version of the tactical spin-off of the game was introduced to the App Store, and it was definitely was not a disappointment.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is a strategy game that was highly praised originally for its well-written story. This is a direct port, so all the graphics, voice-acting, and gameplay are all presented in pure form. That being said, anyone who enjoyed the original should love this. But if you haven’t played the game, you may want to read the rest of the review.

First of all, one should note that this is not like any of the traditional Final Fantasy games. Unlike the basic turn-based system featured in most games, FFT requires you to also move and command troops across a board (just like Song Summoner, another great game, made exclusively for iOS, by Square Enix). This mechanic makes gameplay a lot trickier. Trust me when I say, complete the tutorial.

Secondly, because this is a direct port, it does feature some of the unpopular features of the original game. One of the major problems I encountered with was the waiting time in battles. I found myself waiting a good minute between each time my character actually made a move. This is definitely not a casual game, and may frustrate young gamers.

Thirdly, this game may be expensive ($15.99) and a huge file (weighing in at 456 MB), but if you have the money and room, snatch it up. The graphics are the best I’ve ever seen for iPhone, and the story will take a couple solid days to complete. Plus, hey, it’s Final Freaking Fantasy, so it’s not going to come cheap. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is another successful game by Square Enix, and is great for anyone who has a niche for strategy games. It really stays true to the Final Fantasy series, and is probably one of the best games out there right now.
