User Rating:FlipWorld couldn’t be more aptly named. In this game, in order to survive you must, well, flip the game-world. How? Must I remind you that you’re playing this on your iPhone, you know, that wonderful device that’s famous for, among other things, its tilt capabilities? So all you have to do is, of course, to tilt your device sideways, along with tapping on the screen to make your character jump every once in a while.
The world of FlipWorld is essentially made up of four grounds/walls set against the four sides of the screen. I say "grounds/walls" because what each of them is at a certain point in time during gameplay depends on whether your character, a funny-looking, pear-shaped fellow, is standing on it or not. That’s because in the world of FlipWorld, you control gravity, and the funny-looking, pear-shaped fellow’s survival is in your hands. You see, our dear game character is constantly running the length of the "ground" beneath his feet, that is, the current bottom side of the screen, from left to right, and it is your job to tilt the device by more or less 90 degrees right before he approaches the next corner, just in time for him to change his orientation and avoid crashing onto the next "wall." Some equally funny-looking yet menacing monsters pop up every now and then, and the idea is to tap on the screen to make the game character jump over them. The game is over when you fail to properly assist the character at every corner or monster.
The game is ultimately an endurance run, testing how long you can manage to tilt your device at the right time as the character’s sprinting speed increases the longer you play. Your score practically depends on the duration of your gameplay as well as on the bonus points you accumulate from the fruits and energy drinks that show up every now and then.
FlipWorld is a nicely designed game with minimalistic gameplay, colorful and cartoony graphics, and even some jolly background music (which you can turn off if you don’t want it or if you’d rather have your iPod music playing) thrown in for good measure. If you’re looking for the next pick-up-and-play tilt-driven game to get addicted to and you’re willing to turn out a measly dollar for it, then flip this game up.
Quick Take
Value:Low.
Would I Buy Again:Yes.
Learning Curve:Low.
Who Is It For:People who have a soft spot for simple tilt-driven games.
What I Like:The bright and refreshing graphics.
What I Don't Like:Including more obstacles or challenges sure wouldn't hurt the game.
Final Statement:Turn to FlipWorld if you want a tilt-driven game with rather simple mechanics but is still bound to turn your game-world upside down, if only literally.
