I will admit that I am not a sports gamer. The endless tide of Maddens or MLB games just doesn’t turn the crank of one who doesn’t even watch the sport live. So it was with a bit of skepticism that I took on this review. I was told that this game would appeal to sports fans and non-sports fans alike. Does Fluid Football hit this middle ground, or will it land far from the goal?

When distilled to its essence Fluid Football is really a time management app in the vein of Flight Control. Instead of drawing lines to direct the path of planes, you are drawing lines to direct the path of players. The game is a set of scenarios where you much maneuver the ball and your players into a position to score a goal. You may have more or less players on your team than the opponent. If a player from the other team reached the guy with the ball they will steal it and you will fail the mission. Sometimes it take quite a bit of pulling and psyching out your opponent to be ready to take a shot. The controls are all tapping and drawing the path your want your players to run. taping the player with the ball allows you to kick to any other location. If a player is directed to run into the path of the ball, then they will attempt to intercept it by running slower or faster. Controlling players is intuitive, but can be a challenge at times with the players being very small. When managing more than one or two players mistaps are common.

When the perfect shot comes you can elect to make a kick toward the goal. The view changed to first person and the time slows down. With a flick you direction the direction and force you kick the ball. The goalie will attempt to block it but with carefully planned positioning you will have no problem making the goal. Each level has a series of three optional tasks that make the goal harder to accomplish. If you get stuck, you can get hints from Andy Gold who does actually talk to you, but it will show you hints and solutions. These do cost coins which you collect from the optional goals. You can also buy coins from IAPs.

Fluid Football is an interesting take on traditional sports games. Instead of being a full simulation, it takes one aspect of the game (the positioning and shooting of goals) and creates a game that both International Football fans, and non sports fans will enjoy. There is a large variety of scenarios that range from super easy all the way to insanely difficult. As a free app it is ad supported and comes with sixteen levels. There are a decent number of levels to purchase from the IAP store, and you can simply remove ads if you feel like supporting the developer. Fluid Football seems like it has hit a made a goal for me.
