Playing Fluke brought back some fond memories of rainy afternoons playing boardgames on the floor with all my school friends or my brothers and sisters. Innocent, family friendly fun. I like the fact that board games are getting a second lease on life on mobile devices, and it saves a lot of luggage if you don’t have to schlepp them with you on a trip! Fluke is a welcome addition to the virtual board game family, actually, it’s probably the most attractive I have seen so far.

Six players at a time can gather around the iPad or iPhone to play a virtual board game in the spirit of all time favorites such as Snakes and Ladders and Ludo. Don’t have a bunch of friends at the ready to play a round with? No worries! Fluke allows you to challenge other players online. Each player has four colored tokens who all have to cross the finish line one at a time in order to win the round. You start by rolling the dice: you have to throw a six to get started and later on, if you throw six after that, you get another go. But there are obstacles as well! Sometimes you get stuck and then you have to sit out a round. And sometimes you get lucky and jump ahead via transportation orbs. But be weary: you can slide back as well!

All this nostalgia also has a small downside though: there is hardly any strategy involved, it’s all pretty much down to luck. You either win or you loose, but you can’t beat somebody else’s top score or decide to take a different route or anything, which would have made the game just that little bit more interesting. You can decide to use your six, if you’re lucky enough to get one, to put another token in play, or to hurry the one already in the field along. However, Fluke looks extremely good, the graphics are amazing, gameplay is fluid and flawless. There are three different play modes, Carnival, Mediaeval, and Racetrack and they each look absolutely awesome. A lot of time and attention has been lavished on every painstaking detail and it shows! If you’re taking a trip, this could be a very welcome addition to your hoard of ipad games.
