I love games that make you think, “what the heck was that?” Flying Hamster did this within the first 2 minutes I played the game. The artistic style of this game is one that keeps you coming back time and again just to see what the developer will throw at you next. If you don’t believe me, then let me tell you this; the game contains cows with revolving utters guns, and I’m pretty sure that cow is a boy.

Once you have picked yourself up off the ground, let me explain. You play a resourceful hamster that is faced with getting his girlfriend back from a series of nasty enemies. He does this with the use of some leaves and sticks to create a propeller on his back.

Silliness aside, Flying Hamster is one of those games that invokes the memory of so many different classic games that you can’t help but be drawn to it. The gameplay is very similar to all the classic side scrolling shooters like R-Type, or U.N. Squadron. The game gives you two options for firing your weapon. The first is a rapid fire shot, while the second is a single press / single shot button that can be held down to charge up a mega-shot. The game gives you a variety of ammo that can be collected during the levels. These run out quickly though, so be sure to reserve your shots for when it counts.

The levels are fairly straightforward with only a few branching levels. Each level ends with a boss, but the bosses are usually much easier than the levels themselves The artwork is reminiscent of Kirby’s Dreamland with the absurdity of Earthworm Jim, while the music is fun and gets your heart pumping. The faux anime cutscenes play after every few levels, as your girlfriend is snatched up by another fiend. After you have exhausted your lives, your score is sent to the leaderboards in Gamecenter. There are no achievements, but they are not missed in the case of flying hamsters. As side scrolling shooters go this is definitely one of the higher quality games on the app store. Is it available for $2.99, but there is a lite version that allows you to play as far as you can for 8 minutes, which gives you a great idea if this is your type of game.

We rate this app 4 out of 5 stars.
