I managed to catch Gangstar: West Coast Hustle during one of its $.99 sales and for that price it’s something of a no-brainer to download (currently the game is $2.99). Particularly when you consider that its closest iPhone game equivalent, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, is about $10 in the App Store.

The game itself starts with a quick movie, setting up the story. You’re a Miami gangster and you have to commit various crimes to advance in the games. The 3D animation is pretty much the best you can get on the iPhone and reminds me a lot of the brilliant animation and storyline of the Iron Man 2 game (although in that case you’re actually a hero and not a villain).

There is a joystick on the left of the screen and a button on the right (that looks like a crosshair target) for firing any weapons you may have or just for beating people up. Other buttons appear time to time that allow you to perform other tasks such as stealing a car. The game also has plenty of bystanders on which to inflict mayhem.

Controls are somewhat sluggish but responsive for the most part. There is an options menu that let’s you set the type of controls for various actions within the game. One cool aspect of the game is the ability to change radio stations while driving in various cars, plus the game has my favorite feature of being able to play the audio library on your iPhone.

In short, this game is a Grand Theft Auto clone, but not as grandiose. If you’d like a low-rent substitute for GTA, then Gangstar should fit the bill.

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:For a buck? Absolutely. For three bucks? Maybe. For seven bucks? No.

Learning Curve:Medium, possibly High.

Who Is It For:People that want to commit crimes without any actual jail time.

What I Like:Excellent 3D animation and graphics.

What I Don't Like:Controls are slightly sluggish.

Final Statement:For some low-cost Grand Theft Auto, go with Gangstar.

Read the Developer's Notes:
" The iPhone has so far seen both 2D (Car Jack Streets) and 2.5D (Payback) GTA clones but, as yet, iPhone gamers have not had a fully 3D world in which to wreak the particular sort of inner-city mayhem that has made the genre so popular. Thanks to Gameloft, that's about to change. "(Touch Arcade)" An open-world crime epic is pretty ambitious for the iPhone (…) but it looks like Gameloft has assembled the tech to make it happen."
"(IGN) Move to the West Coast and immerse yourself in L.A. gang life with Gangstar. Explore more realistic environments than ever for a unique gameplay experience. Complete 50 different missions that combine the best of action games and driving games.- A unique feeling of freedom: Drive for miles and miles in massive, open-ended environments. Feel free to complete missions at your own pace, or just do absolutely anything you want!- The first iPhone game that displays such a high level of graphics: a full-3D reconstruction of an entire city with detailed buildings, beautiful landscapes and impressive cars that animate and take crash damage.- Get rich or die trying! Explore the city, shoot and fight, steal vehicles, kill your enemies, and drive or walk anywhere. Go from rags to riches by connecting with relatives and helping out their gang. But beware of the police!- Intuitive gameplay: Drive a variety of vehicles easily thanks to touch controls, and aim at a target simply by touching it on the screen. Shooting sequences are even more enjoyable thanks to the auto-aiming system.- Be a Gangster your way. Choose your favorite radio station (hip-hop, rap, reggae, electro, Californian punk rock, etc), or listen to your own music stored on your iPhone!
