Since the days of Marble Madness, marble maze games are a favorite of gamers as they they challenge so many levels of your sense with quick reaction time, path finding, and puzzle solving. Some games are simple remakes of the classic wood marble mazes with simple maze designs and holes as your only adversaries. Others take quite a different approach and leverage the power and abilities of their platform to bring something more akin to a platformer while still retaining the endearing qualities of it’s predecessors.

Gears, by Crescent Moon Games, is more of the later with a great style and feel that means you will be wanting to try this game the moment you see a screenshot. Gears takes place in a dystopian world where you are a repair robot that must collect power gears and make your way through the twisted paths to a collection duct. Each level has a time limit and everytime you fall or are destroyed you start either back at the beginning, or at a checkpoint. Your points and time are counted at the end of each level and you are awarded a colored ribbon based on your performance. There are twenty-seven levels spread across three worlds.

The Levels themselves are fairly easy to complete if you take your time. The challenge comes from retrying levels to get better times and to collect more power gears/ other hidden bonuses. One nice aspect of the game is the option to control the ball with either a tilt, or a swipe. Tilt control has the advantage of being a tactile control that offers fine grain movements, while the swipe control is better for situations where you are not sitting still, like on a bumpy bus ride.

With spiraling multi-path levels, great atmospheric lighting and graphics, and GameCenter support, Gears proves that the marble rolling genre that was represented on the iOS at the dawn of third-party apps, still has a lot of life left. If you are a fan of platformers, or marble maze games, you owe it to yourself to give this game a go.

We rate this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
