If you’re a musician (particularly a guitarist) and own an iPhone and iPod touch, I can honestly say without hesitation that you’d be quite foolish not to download Gibson’s all-purpose musician’s helper application from the App Store. It has pretty much every tool you need to practice or write a tune.
The Gibson application comes with a tuner, a metronome, a set of chords (for those without perfect pitch), a series of lessons for learning the guitar and a link to Gibson.com. Obviously, being that the app is free, it’s loaded with ads for Gibson including a splash screen recommending a particular brand of guitar lessons on CD.
Despite the benefits of the app, there are some downsides. There were a few instances during testing in which the app froze up on me and didn’t respond to screen taps.
There are a number of features that any guitar player would find valuable. The ability to have alternate tuning, and alternate time signatures in the metronome is quite useful.
In addition, free video lessons are made available for beginner guitarists from the Learn & Master guitar course series.
Overall, the tools provided within the app are very handy to the aspiring or practicing musician. However, due to app unreliability, I wouldn’t have it be my only set of tools.
