Gmate Mail is a small simple app that, at first glance, is a total ripoff. I mean, whe=y spend $.99 on an app when you already have access to IMAP Gmail from the resident mail app and an optimized website?

The answer is plain and simply this- is it worth $.99 to get a bit of convenience with an app you likely use a hundred or more times a day?

The problem with the resident mail app is that it does not nest conversations. If you want conversations threaded together you need to go to the optimized website. The roblem with he optimized website is thatwhen you are anywhere but on the top of the email list the controls disappear. To do much of anything with a message you need to either open it or scroll back up.

GMate for Gmail presents a resident app with threaded conversations and four important buttons- Archive, Spam, Delete and Compose- at the bottom of the screen and then changes them based on what you are doing.

It also supports reading and writing in landscape.

Do you need this utility? Nope. Does it add convenience and save time? Yup. Do I find it useful enough to keep on my iPhone? You bet!

Quick Take

Value: Medium
Would I Buy Again: I would. For less than a buck it solves two major issues with Gmail on th iPhone
Learning Curve: Zero
Who Is It For: Someone who uses Gmail A LOT
What I Like: Saves times
What I Don’t: It is a shame a separae app is needed for this. Currently does not support uniqe domains in Google Apps

Final Statement: For me this is worth the dollar.

Read the Developer's Notes:
Less scrolling, more emailing. With GMailBuddy you can do the work of multiple swipes, taps and menu choices with a single touch. For more emails, just shake. And when you’ve read all those emails, simply shake to see if any new ones have arrived.Simplicity and ComplexityGMate Mail works by putting a toolbar of the most commonly used functions at the bottom of the screen. Where it stays. You always know where it is no matter how much you move around the email. Want to get rid of a spam email? Just hit the Spam button. No scrolling, no opening menus, and no confirming - just one touch. Why not just use the standard eMail app?GMail from Google, has a great way of showing emails. Emails are gathered together in conversations where GMail shrinks the parts you've read and hides the bits that are repeated. Once you get used to this way of working with emails, it's hard to go back. GMate Mail gives you all of that, but with that extra iPhone touch.
