Now this app is very nice! What does it do? On a high level, it gives you an aerial view of literally any golf course in the US, including a graphical overlay of each hole.

The idea behind this is really great! I don’t know how many times I have tried visiting a website (if there is one) for a golf course and see what the hole or course looks like (including yardage), with this application, look no further! You can search for the golf course, once you find it, it will show you the layout of the course and if you really want to drill down further, you can zoom in/out to each hole, tee box, etc.  You can even launch Google Maps to show you the exact location of the course.

In addition, they also have a website that allows you to take advantage of the aerial view if you don’t have an iPhone. So far, every course that I play or have played and then some have been available for viewing.

Where does it go wrong? As great as this application sounds, GolfFlyOver does keep you waiting, waiting and waiting to render everything, hence, making it almost useless on the course. If you tried using this on the course while playing, you better ensure that no one else is behind you.  If patience is a virtue then you won’t have any issues with it. From a practicality perspective, it’s great to use at your own leisure, however, actual course usage, it’s useless. In a nutshell, as I repeat, it just takes too long to render everything.

Last but not least, I will note, as well, that this application can be incredibly unstable. (I still like it despite the fact that it has issues.)

Otherwise, it’s well designed from a look and feel perspective.

Before I forget, it also does have a break meter. For those who don’t know what it does, basically you turn this on; lay it on the ground of where you think the break is going to be and it will tell you exactly how the “green” is going to break on the hole. Still, if you want whatsoniphone’s opinion, the break meter alone can’t make up for its sluggishness. If they improve the usability times, then it would be two thumbs up.

Quick Take:
Value: Medium
Would I Buy Again: Yes, only because I have patience and having this on hand can be sort of useful, of course, at my own time.
Learning Curve: Medium
Who is it for: Golfers.
What I like: It’s just simply cool to see the entire course overview.
What I Don’t: S…L…O…W……and can be unstable.

Final Statement: If you like to see a course or want access to it in the palm of your hands, then this is a great tool to have, but expect that you might throw the iPhone against the wall.

NOTE: For a limited time it’s $4.99.
