It’s simply a rangefinder. It does what it claims to do with a 1 to 3 yards difference, of course, all depending on your GPS connectivity. I should mention that it can also tell you the distance that you hit the ball by allowing you to mark the place you are taking the shot from and as you approach the ball to where it dropped, it will tell you how far you hit it. Surprise!

There is no complicated design, it has a simple pleasing interface that presents front, center, back, and hazard distances and really that’s it. Looking for more? How about 3,000 courses mapped!

I think one of the most important things about these golf applications is whether they apply to courses around you. Flexing 3,000+ and growing GPS mapped courses is a feat. Given that GreenFinder came out  at around the same time the iPhone 3G was released, it has an edge (or 3G, no pun intended) over some of the other golf applications out there.

One of the biggest things that you will see when a new golf application is released in the App store is how they are leveraging how fast they can turn around a course that you may frequently play. Although at some point this may become a null point, nevertheless, GreenFinder is still diligent with adding new courses and if you so happen to find a course that is not available, there is an in-built request form which usually has a 5 to 7 day turnaround time, not the fastest around but your course will probably be there to begin with.

UPDATE (as of 11/6): I have been corrected, they now have over 6,500 courses mapped and are consistently adding 250+ courses per week. Not bad!

GreenFinder helps you answer the most asked question on the golf course - "How far is it?"

GreenFinder turns your iPhone 3G into a rangefinder. It leverages the built-in GPS to display the distance to the front, center and back of the green as well as hazards along the fairway.

Features:

- Distance to the front, center and back of the green

- Distance to hazards along the fairway

- Can display your shot length

- Auto-advances to the next hole

- Use GPS to search for nearby courses

- Over 3,000 courses available and growing every week

- Ability to mark your own course

Be sure to have a fully charged iPhone 3G before heading to the course, because GPS is demanding on the battery.
