At this stage of the game, there are more iPhone camera apps in the App Store than can be counted on both hands. The HalfCamera app distinguishes itself from the others by offering a functionality that hasn’t been seen much before.

Its uniqueness is two-fold. First, it simulates a camera akin to one of those portable half-frame film cameras of days of yore (although the picture quality is better, plus you can actually instantly see the photos you take). Secondly, it actually merges two photos into a single photo and allows the user to write text between the two photos (again, like an old-style camera).

Naturally, you can use either the front or rear camera and the app controls the flash for the iPhone 4. The app also allows some limited photo editing by adding a frame around the double-photo and it’s possible to share your dual-photo creation on Facebook or Twitter.

My favorite piece of the application is the “Film Binder” which simulates a set of filmstrips (remember filmstrips?) containing the photos you have either taken with the camera or imported from the Photo Library. In effect, you can group related photos together in a strip, give them a title and upload them to the aforementioned services.

I’m old enough to dig the retro feel of the application. It’s a nice supplement for those that like the Hipstamatic app and offers a piece of functionality that app doesn’t. Unlike Hipstamatic, you get the whole deal without additional in-app purchases.

As of this writing, HalfCamera is half-price for 99 cents. If you’re a professional or aspiring photographer, this should be one of the apps in your digital arsenal. You could do a lot worse for a buck. Recommended.

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:Most likely.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Retro enthusiast photographers.

What I Like:Retro interface. Good functionality.

What I Don't Like:Could do more in terms of organizing photos than just a film strip.

Final Statement:It may be called HalfCamera, but it feels pretty whole to me.
