Hands-Only CPR is a free app intended to teach you how to perform CPR on a choking victim.  The same company that created this app has also created a more extensive $3.99 app that teaches you all sorts of first aid.

I’ve never believed in first aid apps.  The reason being that if someone is going through a sudden medical emergency, the last thing you’re going to do is check your iPhone or iPod Touch for information on how to deal with it.  Either you know at that moment or you don’t.  On the other hand, if you’re the sort with patience to go through the app before such an event occurs, then it’s a good substitute for buying a book or checking a website for the information.

If you’re using an iPhone, the app has a speed-dial for 911.  The app also comes with various instruction videos on how to perform CPR (Internet connection is required).  For the most part, the app is a promotional tool for the more extensive first aid app.  You’d think that such important information would be given away for free.

While the app is free and is useful to watch at least once, I would recommend giving it a pass. I’m only sorry that the American Heart Association needs the money so bad that they can’t give away their more expensive First Aid instructional application rather than sell it.  Such is life.

CPR. A lifesaving action. When an adult has a sudden cardiac arrest, his or her survival depends greatly on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby. Unfortunately, less than 1/3 of those people who experience a cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public location get that help. Most bystanders are worried that they might do something wrong or make things worse. That's why the American Heart Association has simplified things. Two steps to save a life.If you see an adult suddenly collapse, you should perform Hands-Only CPR:1) Call 911.2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. This application will teach you how to perform Hands-Only CPR through video instruction. This application brought to you by the American Heart Association, the nation's oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of heart disease and stroke.
