There are a lot of iPhone apps in the App Store based on American game shows (Family Feud, The Price Is Right … the list goes on). However, how many of them actually use the name and likenesses of actual television celebrities? Not many, I think. To the best of my knowledge, only one, and that is Hollywood Squares.
To begin, the 3D animation and graphics are superb. They are taken from shots right out of the famous American game show. Even better, when you select a square of the celebrity guest-star, they use actual clips and questions from the show, including the humorous answers by said guests.
Game play is pretty simple and the app goes through the directions of play (which the user can choose to skip). Questions can be given of variable difficulty, depending on the level the user picks. You can even pick your avatar’s wardrobe. You win new wardrobe items with each level won and can change your avatar’s outfit between each round.
Near as I can tell, the game is near perfect. By allowing the user to skip through the "fluff" of the game, it circumvents one of my biggest pet peeves of game show apps. Plus we get Brad Garrett during the first week of play.
As of this writing, the Hollywood Squares app is on sale for $.99 to welcome in all those new Verizon customers. If I were them, I’d try to jump on this one. Not bad for a 45-year-old game show, huh?
