User Rating:I recently was elected to the board of my condo association and was appointed its secretary. As a result, I had to record board meetings in order to take notes. Rather than spend $50 on a digital recorder, I opted to do a search in iTunes and see what came up. What I got was the HT Pro Recorder for $2.99 (currently on sale for the holidays from a high of $9.99).
Keeping in mind that most professional hardware recorders cost between $50 and $100, this seems like a bargain at first. It certainly does a lot. You can set it up to automatically record when the program is launched. You can give each recording a name.
You can also transfer sound files to your computer via e-mail (up to 1/2 hour in length), WiFi or FTP (people still use FTP?). You can also set the program to record a meeting, a lecture or person-to-person. If you have an iPod Touch rather than an iPhone you need an external mic. The one that comes with the Apple earbuds works pretty well.
I have two minor complaints about the application. Due to the artistic design of the main screen, it’s tough to figure out what certain buttons mean. You need to read the online instructions for that. My other complaint is that nowhere in the documentation does it mention the format that sounded is recorded in. Hopefully it’s mp3 or another universal format.
Overall, the program is a good substitute for a hardware recorder and has much more flexibility than the voice recorder that comes with the iPhone or iPod Touch.
Quick Take
Value:High.
Would I Buy Again:Probably.
Learning Curve:Medium.
Who Is It For:Those who need a low-cost voice recorder
What I Like:The myriad of capabilities.
What I Don't Like:Poor documentation built into the program.
Final Statement:Once you learn it, it's very useful for business meetings and the like. Recommended.
